Selecting napkin parent rolls begins with a clear description of the finished napkin. A dispenser napkin, a folded table napkin and a printed promotional napkin may need different material discussions, even when they appear similar in a catalogue. Identify the intended use and folding format before requesting trial reels or comparing quotations.
Specify the napkin format and appearance
Record unfolded sheet dimensions, folded dimensions, ply arrangement, pack count and any dispenser requirements. Prepare a reference sample for the intended feel and appearance. If several colours are planned, approve each separately rather than treating the first colour trial as a universal result.
WEPA's parent roll overview lists napkins as an application and describes differences in white shades and colours. Ask your selected mill which grades and colours it can actually supply, supported by current samples and a written specification.
Discuss printing and embossing early
For printed napkins, share the artwork, intended print area and number of colours with the paper supplier, printer and equipment team. Ask them to agree a trial plan for the exact paper and printing system. Judge the resulting print, sheet feel and folded presentation on a physical sample rather than on a screen proof alone.
Lucart's business overview distinguishes tissue and airlaid offerings and describes customised napkins. Do not assume these materials are interchangeable on a given converting machine. Keep the trial within the material types supported by the actual equipment.
Check reel compatibility and folding performance
Confirm reel width, core inside diameter, outside diameter, reel weight and winding direction before delivery. Check these against the unwind arrangement and safe reel handling method. Obtain the supplier's grade reference, fibre composition, basis weight and agreed tolerances without introducing unsupported values into the purchasing brief.
- Trial the chosen fold and inspect sheet alignment and cut edges.
- Check embossing appearance where that operation is included.
- Inspect counted stacks and their fit in the final package or dispenser.
- Record breaks, rejects, settings and the material batch used.
Keep approval linked to the application
Retain an approved finished napkin alongside the reel specification and trial record. Request supplier documentation relevant to the intended use, including any required evidence for printed materials. A general description such as white tissue is insufficient to identify a repeat order. Review a material substitution before introducing it into routine production.
Send DOUBLE your napkin sample, folding format and proposed parent roll specification to discuss the converting setup and a suitable trial checklist.
