Material Selection Guide

A good facial tissue material brief starts with the product people will take from the pack. Define the intended sheet size, ply arrangement, folded format and pack style before comparing parent rolls. Keep an approved finished tissue sample beside the written brief: it gives the paper supplier and converting team the same reference for appearance, feel and dispensing.

Define the finished tissue before the reel

Decide whether the tissue will be presented in a soft pack or a paperboard box, then record the intended sheet count and folded stack dimensions. Ask the supplier for a grade proposed specifically for that application, with its current technical data sheet. Treat softness, absorbency, visible lint and sheet integrity as sample evaluation items rather than promises inferred from a photograph or a generic grade name.

Parent reels are semi-finished inputs for converters, as described by Sofidel's parent reel overview. Buying a reel therefore still requires a separate agreement on the characteristics of the finished tissue.

Check the unwind and material specification

Confirm the proposed reel width, outside diameter, core inside diameter and reel weight against the actual unwind equipment and safe handling arrangements. Ask how many webs or plies are supplied, how splice locations are identified and which winding direction will be used. Record agreed dimensional tolerances instead of assuming that every jumbo roll fits the same machine.

  • Request the fibre composition and a traceable grade reference.
  • Confirm the supplier's stated basis weight and testing conditions.
  • Agree how damaged edges, crushed cores and transport damage will be recorded on receipt.

Run folding and dispensing trials

Evaluate a representative sample on the intended folding setup. Record web breaks, fold alignment, separation and stack consistency at the settings used for the trial. Keep the machine settings with the sample record so that a later comparison is meaningful.

Pack trial stacks in the intended wrapper or box and check withdrawal from the first sheet to the last. Note multiple-sheet pulls, tearing, difficult starting and pack distortion. A hand-folded sample is useful for early discussion, but should not be the only basis for approving a production reel.

Approve a repeatable material brief

Keep the selected grade, supplier documents, trial observations and approved pack sample together. Agree which changes require a new trial, including fibre mix, reel construction or folded format. Photographs on this page are illustrative; material approval should use the supplier's actual samples.

Send DOUBLE your finished tissue sample, target pack format and proposed reel specification to discuss compatibility with the converting equipment.
