Automation is one of the most discussed topics at tissue machinery exhibitions, but automation can mean different things to different buyers. For one factory, it may mean automatic counting and product transfer. For another, it may involve a connected line from parent-roll unwinding to final case packing.

The correct automation level should match the product, output, labor conditions, factory layout and maintenance resources.

Stable Material Control

Automation begins before the finished product reaches the packing machine. Parent-roll unwinding, web alignment and tension control affect every downstream stage.

Buyers should examine how the equipment responds to roll changes, paper variation and normal speed adjustments. Stable material handling helps reduce interruptions and supports more consistent folding, rewinding or perforation.

Automatic Counting and Product Separation

Accurate counting is important for facial tissues, hand towels, napkins and other folded products. For toilet rolls and kitchen towels, log length, perforation and roll separation must remain coordinated.

At an exhibition, ask the supplier to explain how counting accuracy is checked and what happens when a product is outside the expected range.

A practical changeover system should help operators reproduce a previous setup without excessive trial material. The supplier should explain which parameters are controlled automatically and which still require manual adjustment.

Packing-Line Integration

The packaging method determines much of the final automation scope. Common options include individual wrapping, multipack bundling, soft-pack sealing, box filling and case packing.

Ask whether the packing machine is designed for one package size or a range of formats. Also confirm how the line handles product gaps, packing-film changes and temporary downstream stops.

Production Monitoring and Fault Information

Modern control systems may display production counts, operating status, alarm history and maintenance reminders. These functions can help operators locate problems and monitor line performance.

The value of production data depends on whether the factory can use it. Buyers should select control functions that support actual operating decisions rather than adding complexity that will not be used.

Choosing the Right Automation Level

The most automated proposal is not automatically the best proposal. A suitable line should balance output, flexibility, investment, labor saving, technical support and maintenance capability.
