Why Tissue Embossing Looks Shallow or Uneven

Why Is the Embossing Pattern Not Clear on Tissue Paper?

Embossing improves tissue appearance, bulk, and hand feel. When the pattern is not clear, finished tissue can look flat, uneven, or less attractive to customers. This issue can affect napkin tissue, kitchen towel, toilet paper, hand towel, and other embossed tissue products. Common causes usually relate to embossing pressure, paper condition, roller alignment, product layers, or machine speed.

1. Check Embossing Pressure

Embossing pressure directly affects pattern clarity. If pressure is too low, the pattern may look shallow or unclear. If pressure is too high, the tissue may be crushed, weakened, or torn.

Operators can check:

  • Whether the pattern is shallow across the full width
  • Whether one side is clearer than the other
  • Whether the paper is crushed after embossing
  • Whether the tissue breaks near the embossing section

If the pattern is uneven from left to right, check pressure balance or roller alignment first.

2. Check Paper Condition

Raw paper condition can affect embossing results. Tissue that is too soft, too dry, too thin, or uneven in thickness may not hold the embossing pattern well.

Check whether the parent roll has wrinkles, weak edges, uneven moisture, paper dust, or unstable paper strength. If the problem only appears with certain parent rolls, the issue may be related to raw paper quality.

3. Check Roller Alignment

If the embossing rollers are not aligned correctly, the pattern may appear uneven or incomplete. One side of the tissue may look clear while the other side looks shallow.

Check whether the tissue web enters the embossing section straight and whether the rollers contact the paper evenly across the full width.

4. Check Product Layers

Different tissue layers may require different embossing conditions. A single-layer product, multi-layer product, or soft high-bulk paper may respond differently under the same pressure.

If the embossing problem appears after changing paper type, layer count, or product structure, check the embossing setting again.

5. Check Machine Speed

At higher speed, embossing may become less stable if pressure, paper feeding, or web tension is not suitable. The pattern may look lighter or less consistent than at lower speed.

If the pattern becomes clearer after reducing speed, the issue may be related to speed, pressure setting, or material stability.

6. What Information Should Be Recorded?

When the embossing pattern is still not clear after basic checks, record key information before contacting technical support.

Useful information includes:

  • Product type
  • Embossing pattern type
  • Tissue layer count
  • Parent roll condition
  • Running speed
  • Whether the issue appears on one side or across the full width
  • Photos of the embossing result
  • Video of the embossing section during operation
  • Any recent paper or product setting changes
