Tissue Folding Unstable: Causes and Step-by-Step Guide

Why Is Tissue Folding Unstable?

Unstable folding is a common challenge in tissue converting, particularly for facial tissue, napkin, and hand towel production lines. When folding becomes inconsistent, finished products may show uneven edges, misaligned panels, or stacks that are difficult to pack neatly.

In most cases, folding problems trace back to a few key areas: paper feeding, web tension, folding position, machine adjustment, or the condition of the raw paper itself. Rather than making random adjustments, operators should first identify where the fold begins to shift, then check the potential causes in a logical order.

1. Start With Paper Feeding Stability

Consistent folding begins with consistent paper feeding. If the paper web enters the folding section unevenly, the final folded tissue will reflect that instability.

Operators should verify the following:

  • Whether the paper is tracking straight into the folding section
  • Whether the paper edge is drifting or oscillating
  • Whether the parent roll is wound evenly without soft or hard spots
  • Whether wrinkles are present before the paper reaches the folding area
  • Whether the paper path is clean, smooth, and free of obstructions

If the paper shifts before entering the folding section, correct that issue first. Adjusting folding parts while the input is unstable will only mask the root cause.

2. Verify Web Tension Control

Incorrect web tension is a frequent cause of unstable folding. If tension is too high, the paper may stretch or deform before folding. If tension is too low, the paper may wrinkle or move unevenly through the machine.

Check whether the web tension remains stable during normal running, especially during machine start-up, stop, or speed changes. These transition points often reveal tension problems that are not visible at steady speed.

When making adjustments, avoid changing multiple settings at once. Make one small adjustment, observe the effect on folding stability, and then proceed to the next check.

3. Inspect Folding Position and Alignment

If the folding position is incorrect, the finished tissue may show uneven edges, shifted fold lines, or an inconsistent stack appearance. This is often a mechanical or setup issue rather than a paper problem.

Common causes include:

  • Folding plates not aligned correctly
  • Guide parts positioned improperly
  • Paper feeding position shifted from the center line
  • Product size setting not matched to the actual folding format
  • Tissue layers entering the folding section unevenly

If the problem appears after a product size change or a switch to a different paper type, re-check the folding section setup before looking elsewhere.

4. Evaluate Raw Paper Condition

Raw paper quality directly affects folding consistency. Tissue that is too soft, too weak, too dry, or uneven in thickness may not fold predictably.

Inspect the parent roll for wrinkles, weak edges, uneven moisture profiles, holes, or excessive paper dust. If folding problems occur only with certain rolls or batches, the issue is likely related to raw paper quality rather than machine settings.

5. Test Machine Speed Influence

Some folding problems only appear at higher production speeds. As speed increases, minor feeding or tension variations become more pronounced and can push the fold out of alignment.

If folding becomes unstable at high speed, reduce the speed temporarily and observe whether the tissue folds more smoothly. This simple test helps confirm whether the issue is speed-related, adjustment-related, or caused by material stability.

6. Record Key Information Before Contacting Support

If unstable folding continues after these checks, gather the following information before contacting technical support. Detailed records help engineers diagnose the problem faster and reduce downtime.

  • Product type (facial tissue, napkin, hand towel, etc.)
  • Folding type (C-fold, V-fold, multi-fold, etc.)
  • Paper size and basis weight
  • Location where the folding starts to shift
  • Running speed at the time of the problem
  • Parent roll condition and batch number
  • Photos or videos showing the folding issue
  • Any recent product, material, or setting changes
